In an acknowledgement of its Pilton roots, Barnstaple Town FC fans have adopted the red mask from the Pilton Green Man Pageant on their banners and flags this year. The club has never forgotten its Pilton roots which are over 100 years ago.
The club was founded in 1904 as Pilton Yeo Vale and played at Pilton Park. It was a founder member and the first winner of the North Devon League. The club name was changed to Barnstaple Town FC at the end of the first season. It went on to win the league again in 1908–09, and then left the league the next season to play in the Devon & Exeter League. After World War I, it played at Town Wharf and then at Rock Park and the Corona Works in Newport. In the early 1930s it moved to Mill Road, Pottington, and has played here in the area covered by The Pilton Story ever since.
In the Pilton Green Man Pageant, which is performed at the annual Pilton Festival, the red mask represents the Prior of Pilton.
Thanks to Lee Smith for bringing this bit of Pilton history to our attention.
