Description:

The Life of Richard Ackland, Royal Marine, 1790 - 1872
This document tells the story of Richard Ackland, born in Shirwell in 1790 to John and Catherine Ackland. He was a Blue Marine from 1810 until he retired in 1831. In 1818, he was married at St. Andrew’s Church, Plymouth to Catherine Bunsall. He was living in Pilton by about 1840 and is recorded in the censuses of 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 with his wife, Catherine, and their seven children. He died in May 1872 at the age of 82. The story includes a photograph thought to be of Richard Ackland.
It was prepared principally from information provided by Rosemarie Castle based on her family history, national censuses, the National Archives, U.K. Naval Medal and Award Rolls, and church registers. Many thanks to Rosemarie Castle.
