Mr George Ackland & Mrs Bessie Ackland of 59 Fair View, Pilton, celebrated their Golden Wedding on Thursday 11th August 1938 and this article in the North Devon Journal of that date recorded the event. Mr & Mrs Ackland were married in Pilton Church on 11th August 1888 by Rev Ryan. Mr Ackland, age 71, was the second son of Mr & Mrs Philip Ackland and Mrs Ackland, age 69, was the eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Robert Cawsey. The celebration was attended by three of their four sons and their five daughters. The daughters included Ethel Marion Ackland who married Mr Edwin Lyle Whale, and it was their daughter Marion, now Mrs Marion Abbott and grand-daughter of Mr & Mrs Ackland, who kindly provided a copy of the newspaper.
