Pilton in the North Devon Herald, July 8, 1920 – Welcome Home for the Devons, Sale of Work and Barnstaple Agricultural Show /media/flashcomm?action=mediaview&context=normal&id=703
Description:

These three items figured in the North Devon Herald of July 8, 1920. This edition included a report of the marriage of Albert Hobbs and Jane Bartlett and was kept for all these years by their daughter Jane (known as Jennie), who was born in 1923 and died in 2018, and passed to us by her cousin Mary Passmore.
The first item is a Welcome Home Dinner for the men of the 1/6th and 2/6th Devonshire Regiment who had served overseas during World War I. It was to be held on July 31 and hosted by the then Mayor of Barnstaple, Charles Pearce of Pilton House. The men of these two battalions were principally from North Devon.
The second item is a notice of a Sale of Work to be held in the Vicarage Garden on Wednesday July 14 and opened by the Mayoress of Barnstaple, probably Charles Pearce’s second wife Annie Barrow Pearce. It is notable that it was held to raise money towards the “debt on the organ and heating apparatus”. Some things never change.
The third item is an advertisement for Barnstaple Agricultural Show on Wednesday July 21, to be held on Pilton Lawn, then the land between Pilton House and the River Yeo. Neither the A39 North Road nor the housing on Pilton Lawn existed in 1920. This same area was used for the Devon Agricultural Show in 1900. Note that the President of the Barnstaple Agricultural Show was the same Charles Pearce.
