Sir Allen Apsley, the Royalist Governor of Barnstaple in1645-6, is the man credited with ordering the demolition of Pilton Church tower and spire for metal for the manufacture of cannon and lead shot. The Apsley’s family name came from the Sussex manor they held. Sir Allen Apsley fought for the King in the Civil War until the fall of Barnstaple.
