This photograph shows 'Shilling' Sam Gratton of Fair View, Pilton with his daughter Janet Gratton. Sam and his son, William, were thatchers and practised their trade all over Devon and Somerset. Sam was known to his friends as 'Shilling Sam' because he spent so much time at auctions. Sam was also the grandfather of Susan Houston (neé Roscoe) who has kindly let us have this photograph from the 1960s.
