One of a set of three pictures of the Devon Agricultural Show held in the grounds of Pilton House in 1900. The picture shows cavalrymen putting on a mounted display as one of the attractions for a big crowd, the women in Victorian finery and the men in suits and hats. The show was held in many different venues since it started in 1872 and the Pearce family of Pilton House will have given permission for this grand occasion for North Devon.
The cameraman would have been standing where the North Road was later built and before the creation of Rotary Gardens and Pilton Lawn.
The photos are part of a collection belonging to the Pearce family which owned Pilton House.
Many thanks to Cherry Pearce for bringing this photograph to our attention.
