This striking early photograph features a Pilton couple from the late 19th century, Elizabeth and Charles Symons, married in 1889, before having four children, Charles, May, Percy and Ivy (b 1900 d 1996). Charles was born in 1867 and ran away to sea at 14 years old. The experience did him no harm, it seems, as he lived to 94 through two world wars and six monarchs, from Victoria to Elizabeth 2nd, outliving his wife, Elizabeth (nee Richards) by more than 20 years. They were the great great grandparents of Jaci Hibbert, granddaughter of the aforesaid Ivy Symons. Our thanks to Jaci for lending us the picture.
