This photograph shows Jean Elston (nee Thorne), left, and her older sister Joyce Thorne, right, by the 'Welcome to Barnstaple' sign on the North Road in 1950. As well as showing the relatively new North Road, which was built in 1938, it shows the fields on the north side of the road where the so-called Littabourne Estate (Youings Drive, Barlow Road, Westaway Close and Maertop Way) was built in the 1980s. We note the free parking for one hour in North Walk at the time.

Joyce was born 25th December 1924 and died 9th October 2000. Jean was born 7th February 1936 and is still living in Barnstaple.
