Back in the early days of Pilton Green Man Festival, the Soroptimists had a stall selling 'Athelstan' Cakes - a Pilton version of Welsh Cakes. This picture shows Mary Evans making them with Margaret Scott in the background. Athelstan was the Anglo-Saxon King of England from about 925 to 939, and was grandson of Alfred the Great. He has sometimes been identified as founding Pilton Priory and creating the Pilton Burh, but neither of these appears true.
