Sale of Work in Aid of New Pilton Church Room in 1904

/media/flashcomm?action=mediaview&context=normal&id=837
Description:

The Unicorn Inn, close to the top of Pilton Street, was bought by the Diocese of Exeter and turned into Pilton Parish Rooms right at the beginning of the 20th century. The skittle alley at the rear of the Inn was rebuilt in 1905 into the large hall we use today.
In July 1904 a Sale of Work in Aid of raising the funds needed to build the new hall was held on the Vicarage lawn. The Vicarage was in Northfield Lane and is now known as Carlyon House.
This is a transcription of the report of the sale in the North Devon Journal on Thursday 14th July 1904. At the time there was still £550 to be raised of the estimated cost of £1,000. £1,000 is equivalent to about £125,000 today.
The building was opened by the Bishop of Exeter on 4th January 1906.
Thanks to the North Devon Journal for this report.
