In commemoration of formation of the Rotary Club of Barnstaple in 1924, the members of the Rotary Club decided in 1970 to celebrate their Golden Jubilee by creating a Rest Garden for the elderly on the pasture in front of Pilton House. The story of the so-called Project 74 is recorded as part of their Golden Jubilee 1924 - 1974 History which can be found by following this link:

We have reproduced here the three pages at the end of this History which record Project 74 and the hard work carried out and the headaches which they had to overcome to bring the project to a successful conclusion in May 1974 after raising nearly £7,000 to create the Gardens.
It is unlikely that they could have envisaged what an important role the Gardens now play in the annual Pilton Festival as a brilliant area away from a busy and noisy Pilton Street with food, performers and crafts.
