The building was lived in for many years in the period 1850 - 1890 by the Shapland family (Henry and then his son George and their families) and had a workshop at the back where furniture was made. In the North Devon Council Pilton Conservation Area Character Appraisal, the building is described thus - 'A grand Georgian building in the Palladian style stands over The Rock where it meets Higher Raleigh Road'.
