Download this document which summarises the collected history of the ownership and inhabitants of 51 The Rock through the years from construction in the early 1800s. The building was lived in for many years in the period 1850 - 1890 by the Shapland family (Henry and then his son George and their families) and had a workshop at the back where furniture was made. In the North Devon Council Pilton Conservation Area Character Appraisal, the building is described thus - 'A grand Georgian building in the Palladian style stands over The Rock where it meets Higher Raleigh Road'.
