The photograph shows Doris and Fred Andrews of Pilton and was posted on The Pilton Story Facebook page by their grandson Paul Mock in February 2015.
Fred Andrews, originally from Crediton, came to Pilton in the late 1930s after marrying Doris (née Down) who came from Burrington. They lived in Priory Gardens, ultimately finishing up at 8 Priory Gardens in a property, initially rented from Fred Mitchell of Pilton, which they later bought.
They had two daughters: Eunice, born in 1940, and Susan, born in 1949. Eunice was married in Pilton Church in 1960 and moved to live in Ottery St Mary. Susan was married in Pilton Church in 1971 and lived in Yeo Vale for 20 years before moving to Roundswell and then Landkey.
Doris Andrews worked as a domestic for around 30 years for several of the owners of Pilton Post Office in Pilton Street. She died in 2005 at the age of 91. Fred worked at the Derby Lace Factory and then had various jobs with the Council including carrying out demolition and road works. He ended his working life as a road sweeper with a Harbit cart*. He was awarded the honorary title of Man of Pilton, of which he was very proud. He died in 2007 also at the age of 91.
* The Harbit cart was a battery powered hand cart. Fred walked in front of it controlling a long handle and two men would walk ahead sweeping the rubbish off the pavement into the road leaving it in piles to be picked up and put it into the cart. The carts were replaced with a motor-driven version in about 1980.
Thanks to their daughter Susan Mock for these details.
