The National Registration Act 1939 established a National Register which began operating on 29 September 1939 (known as National Registration Day) with a system of identity cards to operate during World War II. Every man, woman and child in the United Kingdom had to carry an identity card at all times.

This card, with both sides shown, belongs to Iris Pearce of Pilton House, Pilton and appears to have been first issued in December 1945 and then amended for changes of address in 1946, 1947 and 1951. On 21 February, 1952, it no longer became necessary to carry an identity card. The National Registration Act of 1939 was repealed on 22 May, 1952. The Class Code AN reflects the fact that she was an adult (A) and had recently changed her name (N) on her marriage to Charles Pearce of Pilton House.
