This photograph, posted on the Barnstaple History Page in May 2014 by Bob Lemon, is understood to show the athletes of Bluecoat School Sports Day on 23 May 1934. In a highly successful season, the aged 13 and 14 year old boys won five cups and a shield. The writing on the shield in the centre appears to say 'Barnstaple Cabinet Company ....... Shield' which had been won almost exclusively by Ashleigh Road School and Pilton Bluecoat School in the previous 14 years. The Headmaster at the time was Mr Pat Woodhouse.
We have a few identifications as follows:
Far left on the back row is Ron Delve. Fourth from the right on the back row is Douglas Fussell, father of Jean Macrae. He would have been 13 at the time. Far right on the front row is Alf Norman. Others who were there include Norman Vaughan, Ron Smith, Jack Pugsley, Eddie Wellington and Sidney Mock.
If anyone can add any other names and tell who is who, that would be great.
Thanks to Ron Delve, Bob Lemon, Jean Macrae, Rosemary Hayward, Geraldine Chappell and Chris Norman for their contributions to identifying the above.
