This photograph of Pottington Point on the River Taw from 1860-70 is taken from about where the new Taw Bridge at Barnstaple (opened in 2007) now crosses the river. It shows limestone from Wales unloaded on the shore. It was taken before the Ilfracombe Railway was built in 1874. After it finally closed in 1970, the railway line was eventually converted into the Tarka Trail.
Thanks to Margaret Reed for this photograph.
