A charter for an annual Market and Fair in Pilton was believed to have been granted by Edward III in 1344. The modern Festival was inaugurated in 1982 by the then vicar, Rev Anthony Geering, and lasted a whole month. It was not an annual event in the early years although in the last decade and a half it has become so, taking place over the third weekend of July. This brief history was written by the late Noel Harvey who was in at the outset of the modern Festival.
